Start from the centre of Gavi on Via Roma in front of BikeSquare - Hobby Bici. If you want to, you can hire a classic or pedal assist bike here. Cross the historic town centre in the direction of Novi Ligure. You will soon reach Porta delle Chiappe, one of the three ancient city gates. The Antico Molino Neirone can be seen from the old Neirone bridge (named for the river). This historic mill from the early 19th century has a 10 m water wheel that’s still up and running, grinding maize and wheat with millstones.
This route is a tribute to all the mills that were once in operation in the Lemme Valley. Meanwhile at the Antico Mulino Neirone, time seems to stand still. The millers – husband and wife Angelo Repetto (aka Ino) and Livia – run the Neirone watermill in the same manner as when it was built between 1840 and 1845.
This route pays homage to the mills of the Lemme Valley, which once produced flour of exceedingly high quality and low environmental impact. The route is divided into two parts: the first is a continuous climb that is not too demanding; the second is nearly all downhill.
Pick up the loop along the main road, Via G. Mameli, then turn right at the Parish Church of San Giacomo. Take the SP 170 towards the village of Bosio, crossing the bridge over the River Lemme. After Bosio, you will come to the junction with the SP 165. This road features great views and leads to Località Eremiti. This is a level area with facilities and is known for its votive chapel, a point of departure for hiking to the fantastic peak of Monte Tobbio. From here, turn in the direction of Voltaggio, a historic village well worth a visit. From Voltaggio, return to Gavi via the SP 160, which skirts the village of Carrosio.
