Start from Piazza Campo del Palio, the large square where the traditional Palio di Asti is held once a year. The route comprises some classic stretches in the Asti area, one section of a greenway in particular, and is characterised by non-stop ups and downs, through woods, fields and vineyards. The first section is less interesting from a technical standpoint and in terms of the landscape. The second stretch is more characteristic since it is higher up and offers lovely panoramic views.
The direction to take is towards the Parco della Resistenza, followed by Via Botallo and Via Arò before taking Strada Valmanera north out of the city. Head along the Rio Valmanera stream to the village Burie, where you'll exit from the tarmac on the right to Strada Valgera. Follow the GPX track to up to Callianetto, a hamlet in Castell’Alfero.
The locals take pride in this being the birthplace of the cheery, popular character of Gianduja in the Italian commedia dell’arte tradition. Since he represents Piedmont for the purposes of carnival, this means that the area is well-known throughout the region.
Continue on the Il Crotin nature trail. Here you will find an uphill stretch nicknamed “Inferno” (Hell). You will arrive at Serravalle, the most distant hamlet in Asti. This marks the start of the return towards the Feudo Golf Club and then La Bianchina B&B, followed by a long trail that takes you close to the Bramairate hamlet in Asti. From here, after about 8 km, you will be back in Asti for the last stretch of the route.
